Cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye that leads to vision loss. Cataract usually grows slowly and can affect one or both eyes. Symptoms may include dark colors, blurred vision or double vision, halos around the light, a problem with bright lights, and a night vision problem. This can lead to difficulty driving, reading, or facial expressions. Cataract blindness can also lead to increased risk of falls and depression. Cataract causes half of all cases of blindness and 33% of visible disabilities worldwide.
Cataracts often occur due to aging but may also be due to trauma or radiation exposure, birth defects, or eye surgery. Other risk factors include diabetes, long-term use of corticosteroids, smoking, long exposure to the sun , and alcohol. The basic mechanism involves the accumulation of nodules of protein or pigment-brown pigment in the lens that reduces the transmission of light to the retina behind the eye. Diagnosis is made by eye examination.
